Vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capable unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is a rapidly emerging field and is envisioned to have a huge impact in both civilian and military sectors. Developing the next generation of VTOL UAVs, which are efficient, agile, gust-tolerant, quiet, and can fly autonomously at high speeds over long ranges and high endurance would require radical improvements both in the vehicle platform development as well as in their control and guidance strategies. The future UAV platforms could look dramatically different from what we can envision today. Since the control strategies could be strongly dependent on the platform design, they cannot be solved independent of each other and therefore, should be tackled as a coupled multi-disciplinary problem. The talk would focus on some of the out-of-the-box vertical flight aircraft configurations (namely, cyclocopter, robotic hummingbird, gun-launched UAV and an ultra-quiet personal flying vehicle) as well as an autonomous helicopter ship landing technique developed by the speaker and his students at the Advanced Vertical Flight Laboratory at Texas A&M University.
