MEMS Seminar Presents; Data, Dynamics, and Structure in Complex Chaotic Systems Speaker: Daniel Floryan, Postdoctoral Research Associate

Many systems found in nature display complex, even chaotic behavior that spans a broad range of length and time scales. I will describe some of our recent work that uses and develops machine learning tools for such systems. In the first effort, we show how to use data to find the attractor on which they live, and the dynamics on that attractor. In the second effort, we show how to find localized, self-similar, hierarchical structure in data. In both cases, we have been able to fruitfully apply classical ideas from applied mathematics with modern methods of machine learning to find structure hidden within complexity.
