The durability of turbomachinery blades is one of the main concerns for jet-engine manufacturers, both in cost and safety. High cycle fatigue failures of turbomachinery blades may cause engine failures or even aircraft crashes. Current turbofans have fewer blades and are made up of composite materials with a wide chord swept geometry and a very thin cross sectional area (hence, low mass ratio) to achieve better efficiency and noise reduction. As a result, each blade experiences larger aerodynamic loads causing the blades to flutter. Therefore, the mechanisms of fan flutter must be understood and new design parameters developed. This seminar explains the characteristics of transonic stall flutter of a fan blade. Both traditional design procedures and the mechanisms of fan flutter are discussed and a new analysis approach is presented.
